Moderation Guidelines
We're all able to do a better when we collaborate. If you're looking for how to moderate something you've found, check out our guides on How to Moderate Questions and How to Moderate Answers.
Post to the Answers forum should be about repairing something. The goal here is to take a thing and make it last longer and keep it out of the landfill.
There are two types of off topic questions:
- If a question is about iFixit (the site), Right to Repair Advocacy, or something we sell, it should be moderated (sent over) to our Meta forum.
- If a post is about something totally irrelevant to iFixit, just vote to remove it. Let's get these off the site as fast as we can.
Questions that don't have enough information should be commented on by asking the OP (original poster) for some more details and eventually closed. That's it!
By voting on questions as soon as they come in, we increase the likelihood of a positive result for the poster and prevent backlogs.
If you feel like something should be moderated but you're not sure, feel free to mark the question or answer with your best guess. These posts will go into our Moderation Queue to be reviewed by other community members to vote on. You can read more about how to participate in moderation voting here. If you still have questions about moderation (or maybe how something you've posted was moderated), send an email to moderation@ifixit.com
and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.
Moderation Options: Questions + Answers
Remove as spam / offensive
Requires 5 moderator votes.
Deletes the post, and docks the author's reputation 100 points.
Should be a case of last resort. Reputation is too hard to come by to dock someone for a one time or innocent mistake.
Questions
Remove as not repair related
Requires 5 moderator votes.
Deletes the question, but does not remove reputation from the asker.
Please do not encourage this behavior by answering the question a simple comment denoting its malapropos placement or asking for clarification is all that is necessary.
Archive as not answerable
Requires 3 moderator votes.
Archived questions do not show up on any index page, but do appear on a user's profile. Archived questions may be edited by their owners, but no others. When the question is edited, the question is re-opened.
Merge as duplicate
Requires 3 moderator votes.
Migrate to [Meta, Answers]
Requires 3 moderator votes.
Posts should be moved to Meta if the content of the question is about something other than repair. For example, questions about things we sell, issues with the site, or general questions about iFixit.
If you find a comment (as an answer or a comment to someone’s question, for example) and the content should be a question of its own–migrate it to Answers. You may have to help them fill out a few fields, such as selecting the device. Just do your best!
Answers
Accept as solution
Requires 3 moderator votes.
Moderators can accept answers on behalf of the original poster. This should almost never be done. In the past, we have seen votes to accept answers where it was not 100% clear that the answer solved the posters question. We should be cautious with forcing an answer to be accepted, because it has a very specific meaning. We can easily clear questions out of the unresolved queue by just up-ticking answers. We should only force accept answers when it is clear that the poster's issue has been resolved, and that user didn't understand that they needed to click 'accept.'
